08/19: Frontier Medicine, Hands on History Event
Hands on History: Frontier Medicine
August 19th -- 10:00 AM to 4:30 PM
Continuing a series of fun and interactive "Hands on History" activities each month, the Friends of Sutter's Fort and Sutter's Fort State Historic Park are pleased to present a special "Hands on History: Frontier Medicine - Sacramento's First Hospital."
As part of this special "Hands on History" event, Fort guests will be treated to demonstrations provided by several physicians and a midwife showing many aspects of 19th-century medicine, including dentistry and homeopathic cures. Fort docents will also lead demonstrations where visitors can get involved and participate as "volunteer victims" to learn more about Gold Rush era medicine and practices. During this exciting day, interested Fort guests will also be treated to a special presentation in the on-site Distillery and black powder weaponry in action:
- At 11:15 and 1:15 p.m., Dr. Bob LaPerriere, Curator, SSVMS Museum of Medical History, will deliver a presentation about Gold Rush-era medicine.
- Witness the crowd-favorite firing of Sutter's cannon at 11:00 a.m., 1:00 p.m. and 3:00 p.m.
