Author Talk: Rise, Ruin, & Restoration

Wednesday, August 7th
6:00 pm to 7:30 pm

Free for Members

Sutter’s Fort was more than a quiet outpost on the California Frontier. It was a center of commerce and trade, a respite for wagon trains and weary pioneers, and the epicenter of a movement that would forever change the landscape of California.

Join us for a captivating member event as we hear from Sutter’s Fort docent and author Cheryl Anne Stapp about her latest book, Rise, Ruin, and Restoration: A History of Sutter’s Fort.

According to Stapp, “When its founder departed in 1849, his dreams crushed by the lawless chaos of the California Gold Rush, the once solid structure began to decay. By 1855 it was in ruins, a forgotten place whose very existence had once been instrumental to bringing California into the Union. Now a state historic park, Sutter’s Fort is the first large-scale reconstruction of an adobe structure anywhere in the United States. This is the history of Sutter’s Fort from 1839 to the present, and the remarkable men and women who brought their wagons to its gates.”

Space for this speaking event is limited and registration is required. Members and their guests can register here.

This presentation will run approximately 1.5 hours and is FREE to Friends of Sutter’s Fort members and their guest.
