When visiting Sutter’s Fort State Historic Park (SHP) this summer, you will notice that the historic structures are undergoing a major construction project! This project is a significant investment in safeguarding the historical structures and collections at Sutter’s Fort, the oldest restored fort in the United States. Friends of Sutter’s Fort has advocated in support of this project for nearly a decade and we are thrilled to see this project begin!

One of the key focuses of this endeavor is the replacement of the aging cedar wood shake roof. Although none of the roofing is original to the site, some sections have remained untouched since their installation in 1948. Furthermore, California State Parks is taking this opportunity to implement seismic upgrades throughout Sutter’s Fort. These upgrades will enhance the stability of the rooms and perimeter walls, fortifying them against potential earthquake damage.

You can learn more about the project in this News Release (PDF)

Despite the construction, Sutter’s Fort SHP is currently open daily from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. for self-guided tours. California State Parks is currently waiving all admission fees to enter Sutter’s Fort SHP for self-guided tours. Please contact California State Parks for more information about visiting at (916) 445-4422.

Please note that many of the exterior building’s bastions and exhibit rooms, which depict the mid-1800s era of Sutter’s Fort, are now closed. The Central Building (the oldest existing structure in Sacramento) remains open.

However, the Friends of Sutter’s Fort Museum Store, located within the historic structures at Sutter’s Fort is now closed due to impacts of the construction project.

We have opened a POP-UP shop located in Old Sacramento State Historic Park at the historic Huntington, Hopkins & Co Hardware Store, conveniently situated on I Street adjacent to the California State Railroad Museum. The Sutter’s Fort Museum Store POP-Up shop will be open Friday, Saturday, and Sunday for the duration of the roof project. You can also purchase items through our online store.

All Museum Store, POP-UP Shop and Online sales support educational programs, community events and restoration work at Sutter’s Fort SHP. We encourage you to shop with us and support our efforts.

Thank you again for your ongoing support. We hope to see you again soon at Sutter’s Fort SHP!
