This black and white photos from 1939 was taken during the Golden Empire Centennial, a city-wide celebration of  the 100 year anniversary of John Sutter’s arrival in Sacramento. Actors fired up a re-enactment of the Placer Times print shop at Sutter’s Fort. The Placer Times was Sacramento’s first newspaper. It printed its first issue in 1849 from a small adobe building at 28th and K Streets, just east of Sutter’s Fort. Festivities, re-enactments, and parades were held far and wide across Sacramento for the Golden Empire Centennial.
